Buffalo testing is very important as there are strict monitoring protocols to be followed; ensuring that diseases are not transferred from one area to another. All buffalo must pass various stages of testing and quarantine before they are able to move from one place to another.
The buffalo were to be tested for tuberculosis, brucellosis, foot and mouth disease, and corridor disease.
Firstly, the buffalo were herded one by one into a pen, with the head free at the end, so the vet could reach its vein. Then the guys would hold its horns still, while a microchip number was called out and recorded, and 3 separate blood samples taken.
The students were all able to help with the microchip readings and recordings, preparing equipment, and recording the data and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone there!
